Contemporary Western offender treatment mainly takes a rehabilitative approach that aims to correct maladaptive thoughts and behaviours to reduce reoffending. This book examines the treatment of high-risk offenders (HROs), namely violent and sex offenders, as key scholars have asserted the importance of providing effective treatment for this population (Bonta & Andrews, 2007). This text focuses specifically on HROs who have complex needs, meaning a person who is managing several issues, such as physical illness, mental health issues, learning deficits and/or addiction disorders (Victorian Government Department of Human Services, 2012). Significantly, the existing research demonstrates that HROs in particular commonly present with complex needs. Accordingly, this book explores the benefits and limitations of treatment for this offending population and argues that there is a current movement towards a “creative corrections” approach to offender treatment. Moreover, it is highlighted that such an approach to treatment is of particular benefit for HROs with complex needs.
