نابراين، هدف اين كتابچه، در ابتدا به منزله يك كمك به آنهايي است كه با ترمينولوژي ناآشنا در درك و فهم ادبيات اخلاق زيستي يا در مشاركت در گفتگو و گفتمان زيست اخلاقي-براي نمونه دانشجويان در دوره هاي اخلاق بهداشت مراقبتي يا اعضاي كميته هاي اخلاق نهادي- روياروي مي شوند. بدين ترتيب، مقصود اين است كه نسبتاً كتاب اجمالي باشد و كوچك و نه گسترده و حجيم؛ اين كتاب، فرهنگ واژگان يا دايره المعارف نيست بلكه صرفاً يك كتابچه با سبك فرهنگ واژگاني متشكل از واژه ها و تعابير و عناويني است كه مي تواند در نوشتگان اخلاق زيستي اشخاص با آن مواجه شوند. برخي نوشته ها بسيار كوتاه اند و تعدادي هم زمينه يا مفاهيم تفسيري براي واژه مورد بحث دارند. برخي نوشته ها- هرچند بسيار اندك- هم شامل اشاره به ساير آثار منتشر شده اي است كه تبيين و تحليل بيشتر آن واژه خاص موردبحث را فراهم مي سازند. هر واژه اي به نحو «برجسته» نوشته و در متن درج شده اند؛ در داخل متن هر نوشته، شكل «برجسته» واژه مي تواند براي تشخيص واژه مزبور به كاربرده شود كه نشان دهد براي آن واژه يك نوشته مستقل در جايي ديگر در كتاب اختصاص يافته است
